Screening of Verdi’s Due Foscari

For the series of operas from ‘Festival Verdi’, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura presents Due Foscari by director Joseph Franconi Lee and conductor Donato Renzetti. In the cast: Leo Nucci (Francesco Foscari), Roberto de Biasio (Jacopo Foscari), Tatiana Serjan (Lucrezia Contarini), Roberto Tagliavini (Jacopo Loredano), Gregory Bonfatti (Barbarigo), Marcella Polidori (Pisana), Mauro Buffoli (Fante), Alessandro Bianchini (Servo del Doge); Parma Teatro Regio Chorus and Orchestra (chorus master: Martino Faggiani). Recorded live from the Teatro Regio di Parma in 2009.

Jacopo Foscari, son of the Doge of Venice, is convicted of murder and treason. His wife Lucrezia is sure of his innocence. But the Doge, trapped by the machinations of a corrupt city, is forced to make a terrible decision. The Doge is presented with a deathbed confession that confirms Jacopo’s innocence; that moment, a horrified Lucrezia brings news of Jacopo’s death. The Council of Ten demands the Doge’s resignation. As the bells of St Mark’s sound, he falls lifeless to the ground.
